Unfinished Business: A Revolutionary 3D Art Project

Belinda Mason's Award-Winning Exhibition Advocates for Aboriginal Disability Rights

Unfinished Business, a groundbreaking 3D art project by Belinda Mason, is making waves in the art world. The exhibition, which focuses on Aboriginal disability rights, has been recognized for its innovative use of technology and its powerful social message.

The project features thirty 3D visual stories from Indigenous Australians living with disabilities. These stories, presented as 3D holographic lenticulars, offer a compelling platform for their lived experiences. The aim is to encourage viewers to reach out in an inclusive and collaborative manner, fostering awareness and change for the most disadvantaged among us.

Unfinished Business stands out for its unique approach to social awareness. The exhibition is not only visually engaging but also accessible. It includes an app designed for people with sensory, cognitive, and learning impairments, ensuring inclusive engagement. The exhibition has been displayed at the United Nations in Geneva and New York and continues to tour nationally.

The technology used in the project is as innovative as the message it carries. The 3D holographic lenticulars create a premium, immersive experience that can only be fully appreciated in person. The use of an app to engage audiences with disabilities underscores the exhibition's commitment to inclusivity, echoing the mantra of the Disability Rights Movement: "nothing about us without us".

The artworks, all displayed in backlit frames, are designed to create maximum impact in a brightly lit room. Each of the 30 artworks measures 100cm x 72cm x 1.5cm. The exhibition also includes a documentary with self-narrative interviews, a DVD of the interviews, and a book available in bookshops. A website provides further access to all components of the project.

Unfinished Business began its research component in 2011, with production commencing in 2011. Its first exhibition at the United Nations in Geneva took place in September 2013. The work continues to tour nationally and internationally, with the self-narrative interviews licensed for national broadcast indefinitely as an educational tool.

The project faced creative and technical challenges, particularly in rendering portraits that accurately represented each person's unique physical traits. Despite these challenges, Unfinished Business has been highly successful, winning the Silver A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
